The Dominican Seal

THE MEANING OF THE DOMINICAN SEAL

1. The STAR represents Christ, the light of the World, the truth that set man free. This refers symbolically to St. Dominic. The star was seen to hover and brighten above the head of the founder at his baptism.

2. LAUDARE, BENEDICERE, PRAEDICARE – covers, in a nutshell, the idyllic life-style of the Order.

a. LAUDARE – To praise God. This refers to the LITURGICAL aspect of the Dominican Life manifested through celebration of the Mass and the daily communal recitation of the Divine Office.

b. BENEDICERE – To bless. This refers to the PRIESTLY office through which the Dominican priest administers the sacrament to the people.

c. PRAEDICARE – To preach. This refers to the APOSTOLIC mission of the Order manifested foremost in the pulpit, counseling, preaching retreats, teaching and writing of sacred doctrines and the teachings of the Congregation.

3. CROSS – this denotes the SACRIFICIAL aspect of the Dominican life- style. A Dominican is one who accepts Christ and His Cross.

4. The center is divided into four parts. This signifies the four major means through which a Dominican could sanctify himself and others.

a. Pronouncement of vows

b. Assiduous study

c. Prayer

d. Apostolate

5. Each part is colored BLACK and WHITE. BLACK reminds the Dominican that he is sinner. WHITE signifies the Dominican aspiration for the Divine.

6. HOST – symbolizes the Holy Eucharist, the daily bread on which every Catholic is nourished.

7. ROSE – It represents the Mystical Rose of Mary and the twenty (20) Mysteries of the Rosary.

8. FLAME - It stands for Fire, Love and the Holy Spirit to whom Mother Francisca was devoted.

9. HEART – It stands for charity – the love of God ad neighbor and the Mystical heart of St. Catherine.

10. SCRIPTURES – The Word of God – the “VERITAS” (Truth)

11. LILY – It symbolizes the vowed life chastity.
